Saltsburg Stone House Museum/Saltsburg Area Historical Society

The Saltsburg Area Historical Society acquired this old stone house, built in 1830, and established it as a well-documented museum of local history, including period furnishings, artifacts, and historical records of the surrounding region. Expertly developed displays tell the story of the canal era, the local salt, glass, and coal industries, and about collections of pottery, Indian arrowheads, blacksmiths tools, military items and memorabilia, and local residents who served as doctors, editors and educators, and inventors.

A new feature display is developed each year for Saltsburg's Canal Days celebration at the beginning of June. There is also a well-maintained and labeled Victorian-style public garden that adds an interesting and beautiful outdoor experience for museum tours. The museum is open for tours on Wednesdays 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. all year except for the weeks of Thanksgiving and Christmas. The museum is also open for tours on Sundays 1 to 5 P.M., May through October. Tours are also available by appointment. A $2 donation per person is requested. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
