Museums

Indiana County was one of the major routes for the Underground Railroad in the early 1800’s. This time frame of the transporting slaves through to the region to gain their freedom is documented at the Underground Railroad of the Blairsville Area and the Historical and Genealogical Society of Indiana County.

There is one item that you will only find in Indiana County, PA; the birthplace of the famous Hollywood actor, Jimmy Stewart, known for several classics including “Harvey”, “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” and the holiday classic – “It’s a Wonderful Life”. A museum, located in downtown Indiana, showcases his life and the many contributions he made in the film industry, his military career, Boy Scouts of America and his involvement with the ASPCA. Classic movies are shown in the museum’s theatre and the museum also houses a gift shop – perfect for taking home a unique treasure!
