Ukrainian Psyanky Easter Egg Class
March 25 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The Indiana Art Association (IAA) is offering a class on the unique and beautiful art form of Ukrainian/Psyanky Egg Decorating. Class will be Saturday, March 25th at the The Artists Hand Gallery from 1-4 pm.
Decorated Psyanky eggs originated in the Ukraine over two-thousand years ago. Symbolizing resurrection and promising eternal life, Psyanky are popular at Easter and often given as gifts.
Class instructor is IAA member Ann Orenak. Orenak learned this art form from her in-laws over forty years ago. She originally practiced the traditional wax-resist or Batik method. She now includes the Slovak drop-and-pull, etched, scratched, and stained glass styles in her repertoire.
Students will create their own original Psyanky egg using a special tool called a Kistky. All materials are provided—including beeswax, raw eggs and water soluble/strong dyes. Each step will be demonstrated. Students will practice techniques before writing on their egg.
The cost, including all materials, is $35/IAA members, $45/non-members. Registration deadline is March 10th. Class size is limited—early registration strongly encouraged.
