Solar Eclipse Events

Join in the excitement about the upcoming solar eclipse that will occur April 8, 2024.  A solar eclipse occurs when, at just the right moment, the MOON passes between the SUN and the EARTH.  In anticipation of this unique and fascinating event, Indiana County has three upcoming programs related to the solar eclipse!


Planetarium Presentation: The American Total Solar Eclipse of 2024

Date2: Monday, March 18, 2024 at 7 PM & Saturday, March 30, 2024 at 11 AM
Location: IUP Cejka Planetarium, 2nd Floor, Kopchick Hall, Indiana, PA 15701
Details: The show about the eclipse will discuss one of the rarest astronomical events, a total solar eclipse, which will not happen again until 2045!

Solar Eclipse 101 Virtual Program
Date: Friday, March 29, 2024
Time: 12:00 PM
Details: Preregistration required. THIS IS A VIRTUAL PROGRAM. Have you heard about the Solar Eclipse coming to Western PA? Join us for a virtual lunch and learn what the big deal is about this fascinating event! Learn about why eclipses happens and how to safely view them. This program is geared for adults, teens, and kids, age 9 & over. We will send a link via email to view the program the day before. Please register by 3/27.

Solar Eclipse Learn and Watch Event (Program filled – no longer accepting RSVP’s)

Location: Blue Spruce Park Lakeside Center, 1128 Blue Spruce Road, Indiana, PA 15701
Details: On this day, join “Friends of the Parks” for an event in celebration of the partial solar eclipse that will occur in Indiana County. Blake Mauthe will teach us about the ways the solar system works, how and why solar eclipses happen, and some other space related information. Then, after a short talk, hopefully we can catch a glimpse of the partial solar eclipse. Certified eclipse glasses will be available and required for all participants. This program is recommended for ages 9 and up. Pre-registration is required by calling 724-463-8636 by 4/5/2024.

“Let’s View the Eclipse” Event
Date: Monday, April 8, 2024
Time: 2 PM to 4 PM
Location: YMCA of Indiana County, 60 Ben Franklin Road North, Indiana, PA 15701
Details: Activities will include space trivia, kids activities & light refreshments.  Bring a blanket & chairs.  Viewing glasses will be provided.  During the week leading up to the event, the Indiana Free Library will hold programming where glasses will be passed out prior to the eclipse.
